9. Work With What You Have

Reuse, reuse, reuse, and don't worry about imperfections — that's what farmhouse style is all about. This homeowner's one request: Keep the original cast-iron sink and drainboard in her kitchen. As expected, it fits perfectly into the new, bright design. Jon and Kristina topped French-blue cabinets with simple white countertops for a can’t-go-wrong color palette.

10. Repurpose Antiques

This vintage, would-be worktable caught Jon's and Kristina's eyes immediately. And so it became the focal point of this living room. The spectacular exposed lath behind the television is a nod to history: In houses constructed before the 1940s, a treatment like this one would have served as the base for a plastered wall. Here, it’s a unique feature wall that showcases Jonathan’s love of traditional craftsmanship.
