Incorporate Antiques
Easy to source at estate or garage sales (or your own basement or garage), vintage or antique wood sleds are a beautiful addition to any Christmas display. Bonus: These kids' toys were constructed to be used outdoors so damage from winter weather isn't a concern. Place them, as we have, near the front door and add a DIY evergreen swag made from either (free!) backyard clippings or faux greenery.

Sub Greenery-Filled Stockings for Wreaths
No wreath? No problem! Put thrifted or castoff Christmas stockings to work to brighten up your front porch in a jiffy. We simply filled a thrifted burlap stocking with bubble wrap, then slid in a few flocked faux-evergreen branches. For a free filler, use fresh evergreens instead. Or, if you'd rather stick with a traditional Christmas wreath this year, check out one of our DIY ideas, below.

Repurpose Empty Shipping Boxes
If like most of us, you have a recycling bin filled with cardboard shipping boxes, pull out a few to display as pretty porch gifts. Wrap them in leftover gift wrap, then stack by a well-sheltered front door as nearly free holiday decor. If you're concerned about porch pirates, only set the empty boxes out right before holiday guests arrive — or try one of the hilarious pirate-revenge videos online to teach sticky-fingered thieves a lesson.

Surround the Door With a Garland
A classic holiday addition that always feels festive, draping your front door with either a fresh or faux-evergreen garland is easier than you may think. First, determine if you want to want to make a fresh garland yourself, purchase one ready-made or go the faux route so you can reuse the garland year after year. Next, decide if you want to hang the garland via small nails tapped into the front door's wood frame or opt for hanging it damage-free with outdoor-rated removable hooks. Get more tips for properly hanging an outdoor garland, below.

Keep Fresh Greenery Looking Fresh
When displayed out of direct sunlight, like on a shady front porch, and at temperatures below 60° Fahrenheit, fresh-cut evergreens will last for about two weeks — but you can keep them looking their best even longer by misting the branches with water every few days. And, the cooler the temps, the longer the greenery will last, so if your nighttime temps frequently drop below freezing, your fresh-cut garlands and swags could stay relatively fresh for up to a month.
Create a Cozy Convo Area
If you're blessed with a spacious front porch, pull up a pair of rocking chairs for a snug spot to slow down from the holiday's hustle and bustle and catch up over cocoa. Cozy up chairs with plush pillows and throws but — even on a well-sheltered front porch — be sure to bring any indoor-rated textiles in on rainy days.

Cue the Cocoa
Whether, like us, you prefer it boozy or enjoy sipping the same stovetop cocoa you loved as a kid, enjoying that warm cuppa from an adorable mug is part of the fun. If you'll be hosting several guests for cocoa on your porch, turn a small side table into a holiday hot chocolate bar complete with a carafe to keep the cocoa toasty and jars filled with a variety of tasty toppings.

Add an Outdoor Tree (or 2 ... or 3!)
Spread the holiday magic around by not limiting yourself to a single Christmas tree — and only indoors. Create a grouping of decorative trees to brighten up an empty corner on your porch or to anchor an outdoor convo area. When shopping for small trees to place outdoors, the options are varied — from the gold-finished resin pair and icy-covered faux pines, seen here, to prelit mini trees that'll cast a cheery glow to welcome guests.

Light It Up With Candle Lanterns
Every outdoor gathering spot can benefit from a bit more light. And, for ambiance, nothing beats the soft glow of candles — especially when they're housed in lanterns this timelessly stylish. Safety Tip: In general, never leave a candle (or any open flame) burning unsupervised. To eliminate any fire concerns, swap standard candles for battery-operated, flameless pillars as we have here.

Roll Out an Outdoor Rug
On a front porch this spacious, skip the wee mat just in front of the door and opt for a little extra coziness underfoot, like this 5x7 outdoor rug that leads the way to the front door. Durable and oh-so-stylish, outdoor rugs have come a long way from their early (and often plasticky) incarnations. Today's outdoor rugs are soft underfoot, are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and sizes, and are incredibly weather-resistant so they'll cozy up your front porch for many seasons to come.
