An English Cottage Garden

A charming cottage sets an English cottage garden theme for this Maryland estate. Perennial clusters include Asian lilies, 'September Charm' anemone and 'Blue Fortune' hyssop.

Magnolia Flanked Manor

A magnolia edges the lawn of this Maryland horse farm. Beyond the root cellar’s mound sits the manor.

A Willow Oak-Lined Driveway

Willow Oaks line the gravel drive up to the manor, creating a more formal approach.

White Calibrachoa

White calibrachoa cascades from a mounted urn. The cherry tree lends further height to the flowerbed, while black-eyed Susans provide a horizontal mass.

Planting in Layers

Between the estate's barn and root cellar, this mound was planted in stratified layers with 'Mainacht' salvia along the top, 'Silver Mound' artemisia in the middle, and lamb’s-ears at the base.

A Boxwood-Framed Fountain

American Boxwood once obscured the fountain. By careful pruning, the water feature became an enticing destination.

A Landscape of Irises and Hostas

Stacked fieldstone edges flowerbeds alongside the driveway. Clusters of daylilies, purple salvia and penstemon 'Husker Red' provide visual variety.

A Cottage Garden

A brick path connects the manor to the root cellar. Variegated hostas grow in partial shade, brightening the beds with white markings.

Black-Eyed Susans

The Baltimore Pimlico Race Course Preakness Stakes winner's garland is formed from black-eyed Susans, so their profusion near the back paddock of this Maryland horse farm is apt. The race is held each May and celebrated in an annual event on the farm.

A Linear Flowerbed

American boxwood and a footpath frame this linear flowerbed. Between them grows a blooming mix of 'Walker’s Low' catmint and 'Snow Hill' salvia.
